Janice Kay Traylor

Janice Kay Traylor, 83, of Oxford passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 26, 2023, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Anchor Baptist Church (1009 MS-7, Water Valley, Mississippi 38965). The funeral service celebrating her life will take place on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary of Anchor Baptist Church with Bro. Gerald Shook officiating. Burial will take place in Anchor Cemetery. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements. Janice loved her family with a passion, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. As long as she was able, she enjoyed baking and decorating their birthday cakes. Her dogs, Lady and George, were also an important part of her life. She was always supportive of her children and their endeavors and was a committed wife for 64 years. She loved attending Anchor Baptist Church. Anytime she was unable to attend, she watched Bro. Gerald Shook. Sermon notes and post it notes with scripture passages could be found scattered around her house. Her faith was very important to her. Janice had a very creative side to her. She loved scrapbooking, cross stitch, sewing, quilting, and crochet. Her family joked that she watched Perry Mason with some sewing craft in her hands. But, her favorite craft was making specialty cards to send to people. Receiving one of her cards was truly a gift. During her active working career, she held many jobs, but she will always hold the distinction of being the first female school bus driver for the Lafayette county school system. She drove a school bus for 40 years and also worked as an assistant teacher there. Another job she enjoyed was working at Kroger, where she decorated cakes. Janice leaves her family the legacy of a strong work ethic and being a giver to others. Those left to continue walking the path of life in her absence include: her husband of sixty-three years, Doyle Traylor, Sr. of Oxford; four children: Pat (Larry) Finn of Pontotoc; Bubba (Beverly) Traylor of Oxford; Martha (David) Vanderford of Oxford; Jennifer (Lance) Spiker-Luna of Pontotoc; seven grandchildren: Matthew Vanderford, Blake Henderson, Brandy Kay Traylor, Andrew Vanderford, Sarah Watts, Jacob Hunt, and Alex Gray; two honorary grandchildren: Hailey Thrift and Lexi Thrift; and six great grandchildren. The family members that departed from this life before her include: parents, John Hugh Gilmer and Lois Marguerite Alderson Bennett; and two brothers: John Hugh Gilmer Jr. and Monty Bertram Bennett.
