Evelyn "Evie" Cole Shaw Hurdle

Evelyn Cole Shaw Hurdle, lovingly known as “Evie” passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at the age of 80. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, April 19 at 3:00 PM with visitation preceding at 2:00 PM, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 901 Sisk Avenue, Oxford, Mississippi. Coleman Funeral Home, 601 Commerce Parkway, Oxford, Mississippi is assisting the family. Born on August 27, 1945, in Oxford, Mississippi, Evelyn was the third of four cherished daughters born to Margaret Emma Cole Shaw and Lemuel Taylor Shaw, both of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in the Anchor community outside of Oxford, graduated from Taylor High School and attended the University of Mississippi where she majored in nutrition. Evelyn’s budding romance with the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Hurdle, began at age 14 when he winked at her across the room in study hall. They married the day after her 20th birthday in August of 1965 and enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage and the birth of two children and three grandchildren before Tom’s death in 2013. Family was the most wonderful blessing that Evelyn knew and she wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by relatives and friends alike. The daughter of a talented pianist, Evelyn showed promise as a gifted musician from an early age with an “ear” for music. It became clear to her piano teacher that formal instruction was not necessary when Evelyn proceeded to “read” intently a recital piece which she played to perfection in the wrong key. Evelyn’s love of playing culminated in her return to the Anchor community where she enjoyed many years as the organist of Anchor Baptist Church. Work at the Croft Institute for International Studies was also a high point of Evelyn’s work life. She developed a strong bond with many of the students she met, routinely treated them with candy and was genuinely proud of their work and accomplishments. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Mary Allison Fooshee (Chad Fooshee), of Birmingham, Alabama, her son Eric Hurdle of Birmingham, Alabama, her grandchildren, Ethan Thomas Fooshee (Morgan) of Athens, Georgia, Emma Catherine Fooshee and Mary Elizabeth Fooshee; her sister Margaret Jane Shaw of Arkadelphia, AR and sister Barbara Shaw Martin of Huntsville, Alabama and preceded in death by her sister Mary Shaw Jones of Greenwood, Mississippi. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, Oxford, Mississippi or St. Martins in the Pines, Birmingham, AL.
