Dorothy Joyce Holmes

Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Dorothy Joyce Holmes ran into the arms of Jesus on July 24, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS, following a brief illness. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford. The funeral service celebrating her life will begin immediately following the visitation, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Coleman Funeral Home with Bro. Steve Phillips officiating. Interment will take place privately in Yellow Leaf Cemetery. Dorothy was born to the late Bonnie Ceil (B.C.) and Frances Cook on June 26, 1952. She graduated from Thaxton High School and went to work at the Riviera Shirt Factory in Pontotoc, MS. She met the love of her life, Donnie, and the two were married on March 17, 1984. The two would go on to enjoy 42 years of marriage and raise two children, Elizabeth and Adam. Being a mother was the greatest joy of Dorothy’s life. She made every ordinary day magical, every special day memorable, and every sad day bearable. Dorothy was a stay-at-home mother until her children’s teenage years, when she began working at the University of Mississippi in the Telecommunications Office until she retired in 2021. More than anything, Dorothy loved being a Mamaw to her precious grandchildren, Bo, Eli, and Avery. She could always be found supplying them with endless cuddles, their favorite treats, and trips to Walmart. No matter what, she was never too busy to stop what she was doing and play on the floor with them. Dorothy had a love for children and regularly served in that capacity in church. She also babysat children in her home and was known as “Mama Dot”, “Grammy”, and “MeMe” by many children and their families. She is survived by her husband, Donnie Holmes, her daughter, Elizabeth Scheider(Adam) of Clinton, MS; her son, Adam Holmes(Janella) of Oxford, MS; her grandchildren Bo Holmes of Oxford, MS; Eli Scheider of Clinton, MS; Avery Scheider of Clinton, MS; her brother, Bobby Cook(Janice) of Oxford, MS; her sister Linda Ratliff of Starkville, MS. She will also be missed by her nieces, nephews, a host of cousins and friends. Dorothy was reunited in heaven with her mother, Frances, and her father, B.C. The family wishes to thank the countless nurses who cared for Dorothy in the NMMC-Tupelo ER, CCU, and Hospice units for their compassionate care during the past month and her final days.
