Brett Smith

Mr. Brett Keeling Smith, 63, passed away Monday, April 26, 2021. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service that will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven, 626 Star Landing Road, East, Southaven, MS 38672. Visitation with the family will be 10:00 am – 12:00 with a memorial service at noon. Food and fellowship to follow after the service. Mr. Brett Smith was a graduate of Southaven High School, Northwest Mississippi Community College, and the University of Southern Mississippi. He held a passion for sports and dedication to his profession for over forty years. As the Sr. Technical Director of Broadcast Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies over the past 16 years, Brett stewarded the broadcast infrastructure for all the television and radio broadcasts for the Grizzlies, University of Memphis Tigers, Memphis Hustle, and the FedEx Forum events. While working with the Grizzlies, Brett also spent 14 years working with the Big Ten Network. He worked every angle of athletic events, from the BTN launch in 2007, to the many weekends traveling to football and basketball venues. Brett’s critical thinking skills, roll up the sleeves attitude, and passion for his team came through all his work. Whether the fans sitting at home or in the arena, they have Brett to thank for their world-class experience. He not only leaves his footprint on his profession but also on his colleagues by mentoring and sharing his immense knowledge with others. Brett was notorious, not only for his enduring work ethic but also for his wit and ability to carry on a conversation, no matter the subject. Brett was known to never turn away a person in need and would always take the time to help. He had many personal and professional lifelong friends whom he was always eager to speak with at any given moment. Above all, he was a man who dearly loved his family and children; as a father, he was so excited and proud to see his son and daughter growing into the adult versions of themselves and pursuing their individual careers with as much passion. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving children; daughter, Marion Smith, and son, Dalton Smith both of Hernando, MS; one sister, Lori Ray of Southaven, MS; four nieces, Tiffany Ray of Hernando, Ashleigh Ray of Southaven, Shelly Welsh (Jimmy) Warren of Southaven, and Shannyn Welsh (Jeremy) Brown of Byhalia, MS; and one nephew, Dustin Ray of Southaven, and great-nephew, Seth Hernandez of Byhalia. Mr. Brett Keeling Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Johnnie Sue Smith; his brother, Robin Smith; and his sister, Sherre (Billy) Welsh, all of Southaven. Brett Smith will truly be missed by those who loved him and knew him.
