Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven Mr. Billy Ray Hellums, 91, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2021, in Memphis, TN. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 27, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven (626 Star Landing Rd., Southaven, MS 38672). A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 28, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., also at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven. Interment will immediately follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park – Midtown (1661 Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, TN 38106). Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hellums was born August 29, 1929, in Tishomingo County, MS. He was a loving family man, who always had a smile on his face and a kind, generous nature. He tenderly and patiently cared for his wife, Ruth, until her death as she fought a long battle with cancer. Billy Ray retired, after almost 40 years of faithful service, from Hunter Fan Company. He had an inventive nature and always had a way of fixing and repairing items, even objects which appeared unfixable. Mr. Hellums was a developer of the static paint process for fan blades, which revolutionized painting. Billy Ray was also a third degree Mason and was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, having served eight years as an Airman, third class in a Mechanic Supply Room. Mr. Hellums was a fun-loving gentleman who had a way with words. He often created funny musings and sayings, much to the delight of his friends and family. He could often be found outdoors – whether it be on road trips or hunting and fishing. Mr. Hellums is survived by his son, Danny Hellums of Southaven; daughter, Tina (Ted) Hellums Mayhall of Southaven; two grandsons, Duston (Melissa “Little Bit”) Hellums of Southaven, and Theo Mayhall of Orlando, FL; two granddaughters, Melissa Hellums of Cordova, TN, and Tori Mayhall of Southaven; and one great-grandson, Dylan Hellums of Southaven. Mr. Hellums was preceded in death by his wife Ruth G. Hellums, parents, Oscar and Nettie Hellums; one brother, Slim Hellums; his sister-in-law Faye Hellums; and one daughter-in-law, Eva Hellums.
