Mrs. Dorothy Henderson

Mrs. Dorothy Henderson, retired teacher of the city of Oxford (and elementary teacher for Johnson/Peterson Elementary} went home to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, November 17th, 2015.at Baptist Memorial Hospital/NM. Mrs. Henderson was 82 years old. Mrs. Henderson received an undergraduate degree from Jackson State University in Education, Master Degree of Elementary Education from the University of Mississippi and an Education Administration - College Teaching Specialist Degree from Mississippi State University. Mrs. Henderson is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and chartered Xi Zeta and Theta Iota Sigma at the University of Missisippi and the Sigma Gamma Rho chapter at Rust College. Ms. Henderson dedicated her life to the teaching profession as a second grade teacher in the Oxford School District for many years, the Star Manpower Program, Education Director and Parent Coordinator for ICS of Head Start. Mrs. Henderson was the first African American professor in the School of Education at the University of Mississippi where she worked as an Education Instructor for twenty-eight (28) years at the University of Mississippi School of Education. Mrs. Henderson served many years as a member of the Oxford School District Board of Education, Vocation and Technical Training Board for Oxford-Lafayette County Schools, Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, served on the Mississippi Association on Children Under Six (MACUS) Board and as a SACUS school evaluator. She is the widow of the late Robert Lee Henderson and together they had six (6) children, Deborah H. Gipson of Jackson, TN, Roderick L. Henderson of Oxford, MS, Sidney D. Henderson of Memphis, TN, Hattie Elaine Henderson of Houston, TX and Doris (Tracey) Causey of Glen Allen, VA. One son, Glenn (Joanna) K. Henderson preceded her in death. Her wonderful life is celebrated by her children, fifteen (15) grandchildren, eleven (11) great grandchildren, and one great great grand, two sisters, Mary Coger and Bernice Garrett of Memphis, TN, one brother, David (Lois) Elias Burton of Nashville, TN, two sister-in-law, Evelyn Burton, Atlanta, GA and Barbara Henderson of Detroit, MI, four brother-in-laws, Cleophus Henderson, Sylvester Henderson, Theodore Henderson all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and G.C. Sibbie of Jackson, MS a host nieces, nephew, cousins and a very special goddaughter, Helen Malone of Southfield, MI. Visitation is Tuesday, November 24, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Oxford, MS. Her memorial service will be celebrated at Second M.B. Church, Oxford, MS at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, November 25, 2015. The Dorothy B. Henderson Education Scholarship is being established through the University of Mississippi School of Education. Memorials may be sent to the University of Mississippi.
