Velma Leona Fortner

Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Mrs. Velma Leona Fortner, 81, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at her home in Oxford, MS. A visitation will be held Monday, January 22, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford (601 Commerce Pkwy., Oxford, MS 38655). A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m., also at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery (1623 Hwy. 334, Oxford, MS 38655). Bro. Virgil Nelson will officiate. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Fortner was born on August 31, 1942 in Lafayette County, MS. She was one of four children to Russell Tidwell and Ruby Bishop Tidwell. Throughout her life, Mrs. Fortner displayed such a selfless character, always putting others before herself. She was always incredibly family oriented throughout her life. Her kindness was not only directed towards people, as she had an extremely special place in her heart for all animals as well, especially her beloved dogs. Mrs. Fortner was also very creative and enjoyed, drawing, coloring, and sewing in her free time. She also enjoyed Country music, gardening, and being outside enjoying her beautiful roses that she grew. Mrs. Fortner was a beloved Christian woman and will truly be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Fortner was survived by her two daughters, Sue Carson (Ricky) of Oxford, and Lisa Diann Hudson (Kevin) of Thaxton, MS; her son, James “Red” Fortner of Oxford; three grandsons, James “Buck” Fortner (Abby) and William Blount, both of Pontotoc, and Camren Fortner of Oxford; six granddaughters, Candy Carson of Oxford, Holley Carson Babb (Nathan) of Paris, MS, Amanda Bailey (Andy) of Oxford, Cynthia Wheeler (Jimmy Lee) of Pontotoc, and Hillary Chapman (Ben) and Toyrea Easley (Michael), both of Water Valley, MS; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. Mrs. Fortner was preceded in death by the father of her children, Delmar “Did” Lamar Fortner; her parents, Russell and Ruby Tidwell; her son, Jody Russell Fortner; her sister, Ruth Bailey; and her two brothers, Doyle Eugene Tidwell and Curtis Tidwell.
