Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Stacy Vernon Holmes, 86, passed away on April 26, 2026 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Mississippi. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home (601 Commerce Parkway, Oxford, MS, 38655). The funeral service will immediately follow on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Coleman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery. Stacy was born on September 15, 1939 in Ada, Oklahoma to the late Vernon and Mildred Lester Holmes. Born with a sharp mind and a kind heart, Stacy achieved the distinction of valedictorian at his high school before advancing to Northwestern University, where his academic excellence shone brightly. After completing his studies, he proudly served his country in the Navy, embarking on a journey that reflected his dedication to both learning and service. Stacy also received a Doctorate from the Naval Postgraduate school, and served 27 years in the Navy and retired with the rank of Captain. Stacy’s life was marked by a passion for numbers and words. As a gifted mathematician, he brought clarity and precision to everything he touched, from competitive word games, particularly Wordle, to his distinguished role as assistant dean of the School of Engineering at Ole Miss. He was also a very distinguished professor at Ole Miss, educating students in every way he could. His talents extended far beyond academia; Stacy was an avid stat keeper, meticulously chronicling the achievements of men’s and women’s basketball, football, and volleyball teams at Ole Miss. Music was another thread woven into the fabric of Stacy’s life. A talented musician, he delighted in playing and composing music, and even mastered the art of tuning pianos. His creativity and versatility brought joy to many. Stacy’s greatest pride was his family. For 60 wonderful years, Stacy shared a deep and loving partnership with his wife, creating countless memories together. A collector at heart, Stacy maintained an extensive and whimsical turtle collection—a testament to his curiosity and appreciation for the unique. He touched the lives of many as a mentor, colleague, and friend, leaving an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to know him. Stacy Holmes will be remembered for his intellect, humor, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the many students whose paths he brightened. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. He is survived by his loving wife, Kerry Fero Holmes of Oxford; his daughter, Stephanie Wells (Jason) of Oxford; his four sons, John Vernon Holmes (Yuliana) of McLean, VA, James Fero Holmes (Megan Ross) of Charlottesville, VA, Jeffrey Lloyd Holmes (Andrea) of Oxford, and Jacob Charles Holmes of Spain/Mexico; his granddaughter, Tanya Diaz (Carlos) of Purcellville, VA; his six grandsons, Michael Jones of Richmond, VA, Ethan Jones, Noah Wells, Alistair Holmes, Barnaby Holmes, and Wyatt Wells all of Oxford; his two great-granddaughters, Mia and Emiliana Diaz both of Purcellville; and his brother-in-law, Charles Lloyd Fero (Su) of California. Stacy is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred Lester Holmes.
