Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven Michael Lee McAfee, 69, of Bartlett, TN, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at St. Francis Hospital – Bartlett after a short illness. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Monica Mosby will officiate. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery South. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is in charge of arrangements. Michael was born on January 2, 1954, in Memphis, TN. He was the heart of his family, having a gentle spirit that matched his soft smile. His sweet disposition and gentleness warmed the hearts of all who knew him. He grew up on Coro Lake, where his happiest times were the large family picnics enjoyed with his cousins, aunts, and uncles from his extended McAfee family and the Ransome clan from his mother’s side. It was from these gatherings that Michael grew to love parties of every kind for all occasions, especially birthday parties and the ritual of blowing out the candles on everyone’s birthday cake. These parties gave him a fun-loving attitude that made even the simplest meal a celebration. He watched with excitement while every detail was being prepared in the kitchen. Always fascinated with automobiles, Michael loved to help the driver from his passenger seat and knew exactly when a red light told him to put on the brakes. He acquired an amazing sense of direction from his mother, who would explain to him exactly which direction they were traveling. Years later when he was riding with one of his sisters, who often would make a wrong turn while he was assisting them from the co-pilot seat, he would quickly let them know they had made a mistake. His love of riding extended to many long-distance vacations with his sister Marilyn, who was passionately devoted to caring for her younger brother throughout his life. Michael and his sister Vicki, twenty-two months his junior, spent their primary years together forming an exceptionally strong and lasting bond with one another. His quick sense of humor is a trait which will be greatly missed. Often what others might see as an upsetting accident, Michael would instantly see as a funny surprise, causing his family to break into laughter. Telling Michael that he belonged to the McAfee’s and that he was very special would make him puff up with pride. His sweet disposition won him many friends over the years. Michael’s legacy will be the courage and determination with which he met a lifetime of difficult health challenges and the abundance of love he tenderly returned to those who loved him. Michael is survived by his sisters Marilyn (Larry Gene) Carlisle, of Southaven, MS, Vicki Bitter and Rose Phillips, both of Hernando, MS; brother Billy McAfee, of Hernando, MS; and nephews Larry Carlisle, of Southaven, MS, and Jeff McAfee, of Mount Airy, NC.
