Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Lynn Reese Miller Sloan was born on November 16, 1950, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and passed away peacefully at her home in Oxford, Mississippi, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, counselor, and servant to her community—a woman whose life was defined by compassion, faith, and an unwavering commitment to others. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford. The memorial service celebrating her life will occur immediately following the visitation, beginning at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Coleman Funeral Home with Rev. Ryan Dean officiating. The beloved wife of William T. Sloan, Lynn and Bill recently celebrated their 55th anniversary. Their love story began with a blind date—one that Lynn initially gave Bill a hard time about—but his perseverance clearly worked. They married when she was just 19 years old and built a life together that spanned more than six decades. After visiting her sister at Ole Miss while still in high school, Lynn famously declared she would never spend another summer in the Mississippi heat. Ironically, Oxford became her lifelong home, where she and Bill raised their family and poured their hearts into the community they loved. She was preceded in death by her father, Felix G. Miller, Jr.; her mother, Jeanne Reese Allison; and her brother, Felix G. Miller, III. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Mathis; her stepsister, Felicia James; and her stepmother, Shirley Miller. Lynn is survived by her husband, as well as her children: Sarah Hollis (Jeffrey) of Oxford, Mississippi; Catherine Sylvester (Jeremy) of Lexington, Kentucky; Mary Thompson (Scott) of Birmingham, Alabama; Brad Sloan (Susan) of Birmingham, Alabama; and goddaughter, Adrienne Seligman of Nashville, Tennessee. She was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren, who were truly her pride and joy: Hayes and Sloan Hollis of Oxford, Mississippi; Luke, Joseph, and Thomas Sylvester, of Lexington, Kentucky; Lucy and Samuel Thompson, of Birmingham, Alabama; and Cobb and Miller Sloan, of Birmingham, Alabama. Lynn attended the University of Mississippi, where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She began her career as an English teacher in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She later taught at Lafayette High School, where she spent many years shaping young minds. When she and Bill started their family, Lynn chose to step away from the classroom to become a full-time homemaker and dedicated community volunteer. She was deeply involved in organizations such as The Women's Book Club, Coterie, and KKG alumni and advisory groups. She poured herself wholeheartedly into her children’s lives—serving as a classroom mom, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and faithful supporter at every sporting event, scout ceremony, science fair, school play, beauty pageant, and a myriad of youth programs. As her children grew, so did Lynn’s service to the Oxford community. She returned to education as a gifted program specialist and was instrumental in establishing the drama program at Oxford Middle School, providing opportunities for students to discover confidence and creativity. Lynn later earned a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology and became a passionate mental health provider with Communicare, serving students and families in the Lafayette County School District. As a counselor, she offered wisdom to teens navigating personal struggles, encouragement to parents facing difficult seasons, and tangible support for children in need. She also served as the Career and Technical Education counselor at the Business and Industrial Complex, helping countless students identify career paths aligned with their interests and talents. After more than 20 years serving local school districts, Lynn attempted retirement and thoroughly enjoyed weekly lunches with other retired educators. However, her retirement was short-lived, and Lynn helped to lead an effort that resulted in a freestanding clinic offering consistent medical services to residents of both Lafayette and Yalobusha counties. As Executive Director of Oxford Medical Ministries Clinic, she worked alongside medical professionals and volunteers to provide care for the working uninsured. Following her time at OMMC, Lynn continued to channel her heart for service by founding the Run for Hope, a half-marathon in Oxford benefiting children with diabetes attending Camp Hopewell. Her efforts were recognized when she was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Oxford and later as a Women of Distinction honoree by the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi. Faith was central to Lynn’s life. As a longtime member of College Hill Presbyterian Church, she served on numerous committees and remained active in church life for many years. She was also a loyal participant in the Explorer's Bible Study. Lynn often said her goal was simply to involve herself in work that gave back to others—a goal she fulfilled many times over. Above all else, “Reese” was an extraordinary grandmother. “Camp Sloan” became legendary among her nine grandchildren, filled with pool parties that often included visits from the ice cream man, years of cousin camps, special one-on-one visits, story times on the Square, and countless hours crafting and baking in her kitchen. Her grandchildren reflect on their time with her with deep fondness, gratitude, and love. Lynn’s legacy lives on through the lives she touched—as a teacher, counselor, leader, friend, mother, and grandmother. Whatever the need or challenge, Lynn was there—quietly, faithfully, and wholeheartedly. She leaves behind a community that is stronger, kinder, and better because she was part of it.
