John Anthony Onze, Sr.

Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven Mr. John Anthony Onze, Sr., 73, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at his home in Byhalia, MS, with his family by his side. A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 13, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service to immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., all at Clearview Baptist Church (3345 Goodman Road East, Southaven, MS 38672). Interment will be at Memorial Park Southwoods (5485 Hacks Cross Road, Memphis, TN 38125) immediately following the service. Pastor Cory Knepshield will officiate. John was born to the late Frank George and Rita Onze in Schenectady, New York. John proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He was married to the love of his life, Mary, for 47 years. John is described by his family as being a loving, caring, and hardworking individual. In his grandson LJ’s words, PopPop was “a great, amazing, and kind grandfather”. John was very compassionate and always willing to help anyone in need. Being the hardworking and dependable man he was, he always made sure his family had everything they needed. His favorite thing to do was anything that involved his grandson LJ. John was known to have had a wicked sense of humor and his “bad” dad jokes were enjoyed by all that knew him. In his spare time, he could be found tinkering around with anything that involved mechanics. He and his grandson often spent many memorable moments together piddling around. John was also a faithful and active member of Clearview Baptist Church. His character and sense of humor will definitely be missed by all. John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Onze, of Byhalia, MS; son, John Onze, Jr., and wife Kari of Southaven, MS; grandson, John Onze III, of Southaven, MS; sister, Mary (Bruce) Martin, of Meriden, CT, and brother-in-law, Dave Moslow, of Southaven, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rita Onze; and his siblings, Carol Vanlinter, Francis Moslow, and James Edward Onze.
