Coleman Funeral Home of Olive Branch John Asa Allensworth, 68, of Memphis, TN, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. A celebration of life will be held at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May, 16, 2023 at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 6050 Summer Ave., Memphis, TN 38134. John was born on August 9, 1954, in Memphis, TN and grew up in Osceola, AR. He was a retired mechanic. Anyone who knew John knew he was the kindest man. He would give you the shirt off his back while telling you some outlandish (but mostly true) story about his life. His laughter was contagious. He would fall over laughing before he got to the punch line of a joke. John was a skilled prankster, and the pranks among the entire family were wild. He had a zest for life and marched to the beat of his own drum. John lived an adventurous life and enjoyed traveling. He cherished his family trips to Disney. He hitchhiked across the country many times throughout his life including hitchhiking to attend Woodstock 1969. John was passionate about music and kept his own record collection. He had a wanderlust personality that led him on so many adventures, but his best adventure was being married to the love of his life, Mary, for forty-five years. He was an incredible caretaker and always looked after her. Together, they had two beautiful daughters who he was so proud of. He taught his children the importance of independence, but they also knew how important it was to love and be loved because of him. John, being the kind man he was, was also known to “adopt” his daughters’ friends as his own kids. He had a soft spot for animals as well. His kind heart lead him to foster dogs, and that same kind heart kept him from letting the dogs go. John was such a positive influence in the lives of so many and his enthusiasm and compassion will be remembered forever. John leaves behind his wife, Mary Ann Allensworth of Memphis, TN; daughters, Melody Allensworth (David James) of Memphis, TN, Alison Allensworth of Memphis, TN; brothers, George Edward Allensworth (Brenda) of New Albany, MS, and Samson Lloyd Allensworth of Hazel Park, MI. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ada B. Allensworth and George C. Allensworth, and brother, David Allensworth.
