James "Jimmy" Edward Smith

Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven James “Jimmy” Edward Smith, 76, passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024, in Southaven, MS. A visitation will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a celebration of life immediately following at 1:00 p.m., all at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is in charge of arrangements. Jimmy pursed a career as an electrician early in life and was member of the IBEW, leaving a lasting impact on his electrical community through his ability to bring humor and light-heartedness to the workplace. Even after retiring, he still loved to inquire about and discuss impending electrical projects and ideas. In his free time, Jimmy dedicated himself to coaching, reading and staying updated on competitive softball. His charisma to inspire and connect with everyone around him was evident when he spoke about these subjects, providing an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. Family was at the heart of Jimmy’s life. Diane, his wife, was always by his side through everything. Spending over 5 decades together, there was nothing the two of them didn’t share, know, and appreciate about one another. If you saw one, the other was always within arm’s reach. Jimmy loved spending time with his loved ones, and his joy in being a husband, father, and Paw Paw was palpable to all who knew him. His warmth and dedication to his family were a testament to the depth of his character. Beyond family, being a cherished friend was something he valued as well. He was always ready with a joke or a reassuring word to those closest to him. He always made sure his family and friends knew they were “loved more than a pig loves slop.” Jimmy’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering support. Although he touched many lives with his animated personality and willingness to attend to those in need, Jimmy was very strong-willed and opinionated. Being tough-skinned was a requirement in his circle! He was known as a jokester. From the initiation of apprentices on the job, to teasing those around him, he loved to pick on people just to get a laugh. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, of 56 years, Margaret “Diane” Smith of Horn Lake, MS; daughter, Angie (Jerry) Swanger of Senatobia, MS; son, Brian (Wendy) Smith of Hernando, MS; two grandsons, Jeremy and Jacob Swanger, both of Senatobia; two granddaughters, Elise and Audrey Smith both of Hernando; sister, Carolyn Littlejohn of Memphis, TN; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Janie Maree Hancock and Vester Thurman Smith; two sisters, Betty Joyner and Annette Scott; and his three brothers, Victor Smith, Coey Smith, and Laphane Smith.
