Dwight Everett Bechtel

Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Dwight Everett Bechtel, 87, servant of our Lord, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, March 17, 2023, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, MS. A memorial visitation will take place Friday, March 31, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford (601 Commerce Pkwy., Oxford, MS 38655). A memorial service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m., also at Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford. Brother David Sherrell will officiate. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements. Dwight was born on April 19, 1935, to the late Charles and Alma Bechtel in Myrtle, MO and moved to Birmingham, AL, when he was 6 years old. He was a graduate of Westend High School in Birmingham. Dwight served with the United States Air Force in Korea. After his service, he embarked on many adventures throughout his 87 years of life. Dwight was an avid student in his lifetime, which allowed him to successfully enroll in many great colleges, from which he overall obtained a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree, and an Education Specialist Degree. His favorite college was Johnson University, where he made life-long friends who also followed Jesus. He worked as a full-time instructor at Gwinnett Tech. He developed a love for knowledge, as he lived to constantly learn. He felt that all knowledge was useful and valuable in some way. Dwight was a published author of one book, also writing two more, which were unpublished. He was a gold medalist for the Senior Olympics, and while living in Bartlett, TN, he enjoyed playing pool and exchanging information at the senior center. After moving to Oxford, he played dominos at the activity center with great friends. He was an avid fan of Auburn University and loved attending sporting events. Above all, Dwight was a loving husband, father, and grandfather to those who cherished him the most. He was a Christlike example and taught Sunday School most of his life. He was currently a member of North Oxford Baptist Church. Although Dwight has departed from us physically, his way of life will comfort the hearts of those left to continue in his absence. Dwight is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda Bechtel; his daughters, Lisa (Gary) Maxwell and Leslie (Kay Armstrong) Bechtel; and his grandchildren, Kristin Oglesby, Rachel (James) Triplett, and Barrett Oglesby. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alma Bechtel; and brothers, Lewis and Wayne Bechtel.
