Charles Gregory Hamrick

Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Charles Gregory Hamrick, 75, of Oxford, Mississippi, entered his heavenly home on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his residence with friends and family around him. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Oxford on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service celebrating his life at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Greg was born February 2, 1949, in Shelby, North Carolina, to the late Alger Vason Hamrick, Jr. and Rebecca Idol Hollowell Hamrick. Greg married the love of his life, Marie Arrowood, in 1976. They cherished 47 years of marriage and were blessed by a loving daughter and son-in-law, two beloved grandchildren, and many wonderful memories. Having received his Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Master of Education in guidance and counseling from UNC-Charlotte, Greg served the citizens of North Carolina for 30 years as a probation/parole officer and 12 years as a substance abuse counselor. For his public service he received North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, being inducted into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, awarded by the governor to persons who have made significant contributions to their state and communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments. Greg enjoyed traveling at home and abroad both before and after retirement. He was an avid reader, a devoted fan of both Ole Miss Rebels and the North Carolina Tarheels, and a loving grandfather who enjoyed supporting the activities of his granddaughters. Friday nights were extra special when the girls came to spend the night because he played Papa Bear, which consisted of his growling and chasing the girls to try to tag one of them. Greg’s relationship with the Lord was of the utmost importance in his life. He traveled the world on 40 mission trips to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His servant’s heart also showed in his involvement in The Gideons International and the Kairos prison ministry. As a member of First Baptist Church of Oxford, Mississippi, he was deeply connected to his Sunday School class, the many Bible studies offered by the church, and acting as a helper in Grief Share. He leaves behind a loving family to remember his impact on their lives: his wife, Marie Arrowood Hamrick of Oxford, Mississippi; one daughter, Alice Porter and her husband Josh of Oxford, Mississippi; two granddaughters, Makenzie Porter and Camryn Porter, both of Oxford, Mississippi; a brother, Alger Vason Hamrick III, and his wife Ann of Raleigh, North Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved and encouraged him. In place of traditional flowers, the family asks that people consider monetary donations in Greg’s memory to the Go Tell Mission Offering at First Baptist Church.
