Alta Mae Welch

Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford Alta Mae East Welch, age 90, died at her home in Oxford, MS, Saturday, March 13, 2010. Born in Lafayette Springs, MS, she had lived in that area most of her married life. Mrs. Welch was a member of the Eastern Star, Toccopola chapter, where she was a Worthy Matron; later she became a member of the Oxford chapter. She was an active, busy homemaker who enjoyed quilting, gardening and, in later years, visiting shut-ins. Mrs. Welch was an original member of the Pink Ladies at the Oxford-Lafayette County Hospital. She had been a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 18, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at Shiloh Baptist Church, 31 CR 429, Oxford, MS. Bob Brewer and Lendy Bartlett will officiate. Interment will be in the Shiloh Cemetery, CR 429, Oxford, MS. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include a daughter, Dudley Jean (Lawrence) Welch Chandler of Oxford, MS and a son, James Woodrow “Woody” (Joyce Phillips) Welch of Germantown, TN; two sisters, Hortense East Parks of Chattanooga, TN and Betty Jean East Stephens of Memphis, TN; one brother, John Eskrine East of Germantown, TN; 4 grandsons, William Lawrence “Larry”(Suzanne) Chandler of Oxford, MS, Charles Lee (Lee) Chandler of Breckenridge, CO, William Mark (Lisa) Welch and James Lance Welch both of Memphis, TN; one granddaughter, Leslie Jean (Mason) Chandler Rives of Oxford, MS; 12 great-grandchildren, Blake Lamar Chandler, Abigail Elizabeth Chandler, Neil Lawrence Chandler, Anna Grace Chandler, Lauren Jean Rives, Jamie Ann Chandler, Kevin Lee Chandler, John Wes Chandler, Jarrett Mark Welch, Corbin Nicholaus Welch, Brody Payten Welch and James Landon Welch. Her parents, William Dudley and Elba Etta East; her husband, Horace Lamar Welch and her beloved son, William Horace “Bill” Welch, preceded Mrs. Welch in death.
