Mr. Otis Patton

Mr. Patton passed away January 24th, 2015 at The Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was 92 years old. Please keep the family in your prayers. Otis Patton was born January 30, 1922 to the late Ashmore Givens Collins and Lizzie Bell Cook Patton in Lafayette County, Oxford, Mississippi. Otis confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Oxford, Mississippi. A decorated veteran of World War II, Otis served in the United States Army from 1942 - 1945 with tours in Normandy, Northern France, and Central Europe. During this time, Otis was awarded the Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, and World War II Victory Medals. He later was honorably discharged. He received his early education in Oxford's West Springhill community and later graduated from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1949. During his attendance at Rust College, Otis was a right tackle for the Rust Bearcat football team. A learned man, Otis was a math teacher and principal of Sledge Colored School in Sledge, Mississippi for a number of years. He later relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he worked for the United States Postal Service and Kaiser Aluminum Company. Upon retirement, Otis returned to his birthplace of Oxford, Mississippi, where he lived out the remainder of his life. Soon after his move back to Oxford, Otis reunited with Clear Creek Missionary Baptist Church. A faithful and active member, Otis was the congregation's oldest college graduate and oldest male member where he faithfully served until his health failed. He also loved Sunday School where he often lead many challenging discussions. An avid sports fan of the Rust College Bearcats and Lemoyne Owen Magicians basketball teams, Otis attended most of their games. Another favorite past time included daily trips to Larson's Big star, also known as Larson's Cash Saver, where he enjoyed breakfast and lunch while discussing the Bible and visiting with his friends. Otis departed this life on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings: Bertha, Fletcher, Jewel, Earlier Mae, Ludie, Nudie, Augusta, Leroy and Cassie. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving caregivers: Rev. Lee Robinson, Leroy Thompson, Leon Buford, Henry Simmons, Lula Patton, and Margrette Vaughn: two cousins, Matthew Simmons and John Swinney all of Oxford, Mississippi; one sister-in-law: Dorothy Patton of Flint, Michigan and a host of other special nieces and nephews.
