James Pegues

JAMES HENDERSON PEGUES was born on February 13, 1948 to the late Henderson and Pauline (Hilliard) Pegues. James was a member of Philadelphia M.B. Church, where he served faithfully until the Lord called him home. James has also served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday school teacher, Choir president, Usher, and one of the musicians in his church. He was also a member and lead guitarist for the Mighty Stars of Harmony, now the Gospel Stars of Oxford, Mississippi, for over 50 years. He was also a musician for another local group, the Love Sisters. James loved his church and felt that Philadelphia M.B. Church had the best musicians in the district. He is also a member of the Order of Eastern Stars #287 and Philadelphia Lodge #387. His passions were spending time with family, traveling, playing his guitar and helping others. When his health failed and he could not play his guitar, he continued to serve the Lord. He didn’t let his health cripple him from doing the things he wanted and could do. While in school, he was also a member of the JJ Rockets Band which he often bragged about how good they were. James is a 1967 graduate of Central High School, a member of OTS/CHS Alumni Association and most recently joined the Lafayette Civic Center Organization. James served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was blessed enough to return home to talk about his experience. He retired from Georgia Pacific with over 25 years and also worked at Wal-Mart as a Garden Center associate until his health begin to fail. On Monday, September 5, 2016, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home, he peacefully took a non-stop flight to be with the Lord. He is preceded in death by his father; Henderson N. Pegues, mother; Pauline H. Pegues and one sister, Corrine Pegues. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Shirley Anderson Pegues; three sons; William (Carol) Flemons of Oxford, MS, Anthony (Daintry) Pegues of Abbeville, MS, and Carlos (Demetrica) Pegues of Oxford, MS; one stepson, Kevin Fisher of Oxford, MS; four sisters; Edna P. Dickens, Alice (Lawrence) Bell, Murlean Pegues, Willie Mae Pegues, all of Oxford, MS, four brothers; Robert (Mary) Pegues, Charlie Pegues and Willie Gene Pegues, all of Oxford, MS, Murry Pegues of Abbeville, MS, five grandchildren; Justin Pegues, Madison Pegues, Jaden Pegues, Tre’ Johnson and Key’ana Blackmon, four aunts; Bessie Bright of Chicago, IL, Estelle Campbell, Lena Mae (A.J.) Pegues, Myra Cross, all of Oxford, MS. A mother-in-law; Edna Anderson of Memphis, TN, two sisters-in-law; Vanessa Anderson of Memphis, TN and Caroline (Ricky) Wadlington, Oxford, MS, two brothers-in-law, Eddie (Jeanette) Anderson and Alvin Frierson all of Oxford, MS and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
